WORST DAMN SPORTS SHOW - COMMENTARY |
STADIUMS DO NOT MAKE MONEY FOR THE HOST CITY TELL YOUR COUNCIL YOU DON'T WANT THE STADIUM-anywhere in Oceanside!it is not fiscally responsible. Studies show these stadiums are a drain on the host city. Click here. City of San Diego Audit finds the Charger Stadium a drain on City finances

"Stadium operations are not self-sustaining and must be significantly subsidized
through Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) and other non-stadium asset revenue."
"According to our studies, the only taxpayer-funded stadium that makes money is the Meadowlands in New Jersey," said Erik Stover, the city-employed manager of Qualcom. http://www.sdcitybeat.com/article.php?id=5397
There is NO FREE LUNCH for the cities.
Every city with a stadium ends up financing part of the stadium with taxpayer money. The Oceanside City Council says they can't afford leadership positions in the Fire Department, i.e. our public safety doesn't matter much, but they are entertaining this ridiculous proposal? People are still complaining about the subsidy for the hotel. Will they willingly give up another huge subsidy to a private sports team without complaining? The stadium proposal is a field of schemes and a fantasy guaranteed to drain general funds away from the rest of the city with the huge hidden costs for emergency & Police services, infrastructure and repairs. As you can imagine, this has a huge potential to severely tax and threaten the city's overall financial health. Why would anyone vote for something that has such high costs associated with it?
" It is a difficult project to persuade the private sector to invest over $800 million, probably closer to $1 billion, in a project to build the new stadium, build the traffic improvements, tear down the old stadium, pay off the bonds on the old stadium and then, and only then, start to build profit-making condominiums."
That was Fabiani's statement in October, 2006. What has really changed? He was talking about Class A office buildings in Oceanside rather than condos. We all know what happened to that market. How many condos and condo conversions are either on the market or in foreclosure?
Now he's talking about private land at the old drive-in property. A mall has been approved for that land bringing much needed goods and services to a highly-underserved area. I'm sure people would rather have a Costco and Target rather than an over-priced, loud stadium near their homes. Plus what does a stadium really bring? Low paying, minimum-wage jobs that are a drain on our medical and emergency services? Where will these people live? 5 and 10 to an apartment? Oceanside just passed a mini-dorm type ordinance that will prohibit that. And once again, Fabiani and his fantasy dreamers don't see the homes that are within a few hundred feet of the stadium 'site'. Nor have they looked at the proximity of the airport or the wildlife preserve area. It's just another rich boys dream to take advantage of the poor hicks in Oceanside. The Drive In IS NOT THE PLACE FOR A CHARGERS' STADIUM EITHER. The opinions stated herein are not the official
